Other Tendon Injuries in Orange County

Injuries to the tendons on top of the foot and ankle (extensor tendons) generally cause pain and swelling in the top of the foot or ankle. The extensor tendons pull the toes and foot up at the ankle joint. The tendons in the back of the foot and ankle (flexor tendons) generally cause pain and swelling in the bottom and sides of the foot or behind the ankle. These tendons flex the toes and ankle joint downward. Pain is often worse with increased activity.

Some of the commonly injured extensor and flexor tendons of the foot and ankle include:

  • Tibialis Anterior tendon.

  • Extensor Hallucis Longus tendon

  • Extensor Digitorum Longus tendon

  • Flexor Hallucis Longus tendon

  • Flexor Digitorum Longus tendon

  • Smaller intrinsic muscles and tendons may be injured, but these are generally less serious in nature.

Treatment of tendon injuries in Orange County varies based on the tendon injured and nature of the injury. Many tendon injuries can be treated non-operatively. In these cases cast or cast boot immobilization may be used to allow the tendon time to heel, followed by physical therapy.

Based on the type and extent of tendon injury, surgical treatment may be considered. In cases where the tendon is significantly torn or ruptured, or where the patient has lost muscle strength or the ability to properly move the foot or ankle surgery is generally indicated. Surgical procedures are determined by you and our Orange County Podiatrist / Foot and Ankle Surgeon in order to restore your activity level and foot function as closely to its original state as possible.

Surgical procedures may consist of debridement of the injured tendon (tenosynovectomy), direct tendon repair, or tendon transfer.  Dr. Coyer, Orange County Foot and Ankle Surgeon, also performs minimally invasive techniques for many tendon conditions, which may allow for sooner return to pre-injury activities if the procedure is indicated for your individual case.

Advanced imaging such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) may be used to help fully evaluate the extent of your injury to assist with treatment decisionmaking and operative planning.

Our Orange County foot doctor is an expert in surgical and non-surgical treatment of all foot and ankle tendon injuries. Dr. Coyer will help you develop a plan to maintain foot function and meet your present and future activity goals.
